How long will it actually take?

Pick a charger type and see the time, the cost, and the miles you get back.

DC fast charging is modelled with a realistic taper, so the last 20% takes disproportionately long β€” that's physics, not a bad charger. AC charging (Level 1 and 2) runs at a steady rate and is capped by your car's onboard charger, which is commonly 7.7–11.5 kW.

Why everyone says "10 to 80%"

A DC fast charger doesn't deliver full power the whole time. The battery accepts a lot of current when it's fairly empty, then the car progressively tapers power to protect the cells as it fills. Past roughly 80%, the taper is steep enough that you're often waiting as long for the last 20% as you did for the first 60%.

On a road trip you're almost always better off making two short stops than one long one. Charge to 80%, drive on, top up again β€” you'll arrive sooner.

In the cold, this curve gets worse. A battery below freezing accepts power slowly until it warms up. Many EVs will precondition the pack automatically if you navigate to a fast charger β€” use that, especially in January.

Circuit sizing cheat sheet

Electrical code limits a continuous load to 80% of the breaker rating. That's why a 50-amp circuit gives you 40 amps of charging, not 50.

Range-per-hour assumes about 3.2 mi/kWh. Your car's onboard charger sets the real ceiling β€” installing a 60A circuit won't help if the car only accepts 7.7 kW.

Installing in Maine: EV charger installation is electrical work. It must be done by a licensed electrician, and it requires a permit and inspection β€” the electrician notifies the state electrical inspector, or the municipal inspector if your town has one.   • Charge to 80% for daily use. Save 100% for road-trip mornings. Most cars let you set this once and forget it.
  • Don't leave it sitting full or empty. Long-term storage is happiest around 50–60%.
  • Fast charging is fine β€” just not as your default. Occasional DC use is what the car is designed for; exclusive DC use accelerates fade.
  • Plug in when it's very cold. Staying connected lets the car keep the pack in a healthy temperature band using grid power.
  • Don't panic about degradation. Federal law mandates an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty minimum, and loss is typically gradual.

🀝 Public charging etiquette

  • Move when you're done. Especially at DC fast chargers β€” leaving a full car parked is the number one complaint.
  • Don't stop at 100% at a fast charger. You're occupying the stall during the slowest part of the curve. Finish at home.
  • Never unplug someone else's car unless it's clearly finished and the site explicitly allows it.
  • Don't park a gas car in a charging spot. Being "ICEd" is the fastest way to strand somebody.
  • Report broken units in the app. It's how they get fixed, and it warns the next driver.
  • Coil the cable when you leave. Maine winters are hard on cables lying in slush.

🏒 No driveway? Your options

  • Ask about a dedicated outlet. Even a standard 120V outlet near your space covers a lot of drivers. Offer to pay for a submeter.
  • Workplace charging. If your employer has Level 2, that becomes your "home" charging and the math works out fine.
  • Map your nearest public Level 2. A weekly session while you shop or work out can be enough for modest mileage.
  • Weekly DC fast top-up. Workable, but budget for it β€” public fast charging can cost two to three times home rates.
  • Consider a PHEV instead. Genuinely the honest answer for some street-parked drivers.

⚑ Your first DC fast charge, step by step

  1. Before you go, install the network's app and add a payment method.
  2. If your car offers it, navigate to the charger so the battery preconditions on the way.
  3. Park so your charge port reaches β€” cables are shorter than you expect.
  4. Start the session in the app (or tap your card) before plugging in on some networks; the screen will tell you.
  5. Push the connector in firmly. It latches β€” a loose plug is the usual reason a session won't start.
  6. Watch the first minute to confirm power is actually flowing, then go get a coffee.
  7. Stop around 80%, unplug, and move the car.

Battery Electric

Plug-in only, no gas engine at all. No oil changes, no exhaust, no fuel filter. The one people mean by "EV."

PHEV

Plug-in Hybrid

Typically 20–50 electric miles, then a gas engine takes over. A reasonable hedge for long rural drives β€” Maine has roughly as many PHEVs registered as BEVs.

HEV

Conventional Hybrid
